WHY I DON'T RECOMMEND PERIOD TRACKING APPS

why i don't recommend period tracking apps

We live in a world where technology is inescapable.
If you're reading this, chances are you're just like me. We have phones and laptops and all of the things that make our lives so much easier. The whole world is at our fingertips.
We seem more connected than ever; in constant comms with one and other, no matter where we are in the world. Yet, by the same token, we've never been more disconnected.
From ourselves, and most definitely from our bodies.
This same push/pull, light/dark, give/take applies to how technology has shaped our relationships to our menstrual cycles.

Period tracking apps are wonderful in that they've opened cycle-tracking up to a whole world of people who may have otherwise never even thought twice about it.
Yet, when we rely on these apps to teach us about ourselves, we diminish our ability to really connect and deeply listen and learn from our bodies.

Below are my top three reasons why I don't recommend relying *solely* on period tracking apps.

1. WHEN WE USE APPS, WE ARE LESS LIKELY TO LEARN BODY LITERACY AND LISTEN TO OUR OWN BODILY CUES.

Relying on apps to teach you about your body means that you don't learn to read your body yourself.
Your body is wise. She is in constant communication with you. When we learn to listen to the cues, we gain access to a deep wisdom that exists within.

2. OUR BODIES DON'T FOLLOW AN AVERAGE OF COLLECTED DATA

These apps work by collecting data over time. They average out your recorded cycle length and make predictions based on that data. That could be useful for you if you have a clear, rhythmic and very regular cycle. But, if you fluctuate as I do, these apps will not respond to the fluidity of your body and its inevitable changes.

3. RELIANCE ON ALGORITHMS TAKES AWAY BODY SOVEREIGNTY

A big part of this work for me, is in becoming self-sovereign. In learning to read and understand the language of my body, I reclaimed ownership of myself, my emotions and my physical body.
When we become sovereign and not reliant on technology to know ourselves, this is something that can't be taken away from us.
What if the app got deleted, would you know your body? Or, if it were no longer safe in your country to have your data in the ether?
Unfortunately this is a very real truth in some countries.
What is now being called 'menstrual surveillance' in relation to abortion rights.

Body literacy breeds body sovereignty. And that cannot be calculated with an algorithm, nor taken away from you once you learn.

This work is important for so many reasons.
